EFF hits back at AfriForum over Malema’s crimen injuria prosecution
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the announcement that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following a private prosecution initiative by AfriForum.
The case stems from allegations made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) that there were sufficient grounds to proceed with the charges.
The EFF maintains that these legal actions are politically motivated attempts to silence the party and its leadership through the use of the judicial system.
In their statement, the EFF dismissed the prosecution as a desperate move by a lobby group that seeks to undermine the political influence of the party. They further asserted that Malema’s comments were made in the context of public interest and advocacy for victims.
AfriForum, however, has framed the prosecution as a necessary step to ensure accountability and to protect the dignity of individuals who are subjected to what they describe as reckless and defamatory accusations by public figures.
