The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the announcement that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following a private prosecution initiative by AfriForum.

The case stems from comments made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to proceed with the charges after the organization argued that the accusations were false and defamatory.

The EFF maintains that this is a politically motivated attempt to silence the party and its leadership through the judicial system.

In their response, the EFF characterized the legal action as a continuation of AfriForum’s long-standing campaign against the party. They asserted that Malema’s statements were made in the context of advocating for the rights of vulnerable children and that the prosecution is an attempt to intimidate those who speak out against perceived injustices.

AfriForum, however, maintains that the prosecution is necessary to uphold the rule of law and protect individuals from what they describe as reckless and unsubstantiated public accusations. The organization has stated that they will continue to pursue legal avenues to hold Malema accountable for his public conduct.
