EFF hits back at AfriForum over Malema’s crimen injuria prosecution
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the announcement that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face criminal prosecution for crimen injuria. The case, which stems from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, has been brought to the fore by AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.
AfriForum has successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution. The charges relate to comments made by Malema in which he labeled a school principal a “rapist” despite the lack of a criminal conviction or formal finding to support such a claim.
The EFF maintains that this is a politically motivated attempt to silence their leader and distract from the party’s core mandate of economic emancipation.
In a statement, the EFF characterized the move as a desperate attempt by AfriForum to use the legal system to harass their leadership. They argue that the prosecution is part of a broader campaign to undermine the party’s influence in South African politics.
The NPA has confirmed that it has instructed prosecutors to initiate the case, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal battles between the EFF and the civil rights organization.
