Support for ANC in major cities falls ahead of local elections
Recent polling and political analysis indicate that the African National Congress (ANC) is facing a decline in support within major South African cities as the country approaches the upcoming local government elections. Data from the Social Research Foundation and Ipsos suggest that the ANC’s national support has dropped to between 35% and 39%, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) has seen its support rise to between 25% and 28%.
The political landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with the DA aiming to become the largest party in the country’s metros. Recent by-election results have highlighted the ANC’s vulnerability, including a notable loss in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, where the DA secured a victory in a ward previously considered an ANC stronghold.
The DA victory in Ward 28 is an indication that residents are tired of empty promises and have lost confidence in the ANC government in Emfuleni.
As the election date approaches, the ANC is also dealing with internal turmoil, including disputes over election lists and accusations of using state resources to secure support. Opposition parties have criticized the ruling party for alleged cadre deployment and the use of government positions to influence voters, claims which the ANC and its deployees have denied.
