The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, stating that her removal would be “premature.”

The vote, scheduled for Wednesday, 26 August, follows a motion tabled by EFF leader Julius Malema, who accuses Didiza of failing to defend Parliament. The accusation stems from her decision not to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s successful court application to temporarily interdict the Phala Phala impeachment’s public hearings.

DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis expressed that while he was critical of Didiza’s approach to the President’s interdict application, he held a “very fruitful” meeting with the Speaker. Michalakis emphasized that the party believes removing Didiza would not be the appropriate way to strengthen the institution of Parliament at this time.
