REST IN PEACE: 8-Year-Old Boy Raped and Killed While Sleeping Over at Friend’s House💔🕊️

8-year-old Daniël (or Daniel) Jamneck in Kraaifontein (Peerless Park North), Cape Town. The perpetrator is Arthur Wheeler (also referred to as a 47-49-year-old man at the time

Daniël, 8, was friends with Wheeler’s son (around 12 at the time). Wheeler asked Daniël’s mother for permission for the boy to sleep over at his rented flat/granny unit. The mother agreed, as the boys were friends and it seemed safe.

Daniël slept next to Wheeler on a double bed in the same bedroom. Wheeler’s son slept on a separate bunk bed in the room. In the middle of the night, Wheeler woke a housemate/landlord, saying the boy had stopped breathing. The housemate tried CPR, but Daniël was declared dead at the scene.

Police initially opened an inquest docket. No immediate foul play was obvious, but an autopsy changed everything.
The autopsy revealed signs of rape/sexual assault (bruises, teeth marks/bite marks and abrasions on private parts, adult pubic hair found in anus area) and strangulation (nail marks on the neck, internal bruising). Charges were upgraded from murder to include rape and sexual assault.

Wheeler was arrested and first appeared in Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court shortly after. He claimed he didn’t know why he was arrested and asked about sleeping arrangements.

He had a prior rape case from 2005 involving a 22-year-old woman (drugged/spiked drink at a party, raped). He admitted it but entered a diversion/rehabilitation program instead of full conviction/jail (3-year sentence via plea agreement). He only attended briefly (e.g., 3 months) and absconded. The original victim later pushed to revisit the case after this incident.

He was on parole/diversion-related status at the time of Daniël’s death. He had been involved in neighborhood watch previously and presented as trustworthy to some.

Denied multiple times. State opposed strongly due to the nature of the crime, prior history, and risk. His son was placed with social workers and became a key state witness.

Wheeler pleaded not guilty and maintained innocence throughout. Evidence included forensic details, his son’s testimony (noted as the first child in a SA courtroom supported by a therapy dog), and other witnesses.

On 22 May 2026, the court found him guilty of the murder and rape of Daniël Jamneck, plus linked to the earlier rape (Brown or the 2005 case). The evidence, including from his own son, was compelling.

Sentencing was due on 21 July 2026 (just before the current date). Likely life imprisonment expected given the charges and priors, but I don’t have confirmed post-sentencing details yet.

Let Daniel’s tragic story remind us all to be more vigilant and to protect our children fiercely. Sleepovers, playdates, nothing should ever cost a child their life.

Rest in eternal peace, angel Daniel. You are loved and remembered.
