Speaker initiates establishment of impeachment committee after Phala Phala court ruling
In response to the Constitutional Court’s judgment on the Phala Phala vote, Parliament has announced that National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza will initiate the process to establish an impeachment committee to investigate whether President Cyril Ramaphosa should be impeached.
The committee is being formed following a court ruling that found the National Assembly’s previous handling of the Section 89 independent panel report to be unconstitutional. The 31-member committee will be tasked with determining whether the President committed an impeachable offence regarding the 2020 theft at his Phala Phala farm.
According to parliamentary procedures, the committee will include proportional representation from political parties in the National Assembly to ensure a broad-based investigation into the allegations.
