The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has arrested a 42-year-old police sergeant stationed at the Lebombo Port of Entry for alleged corruption following a targeted operation conducted on 08 June 2026.

The arrest stems from information received through Crime Intelligence regarding criminal activities at the Lebombo Port of Entry. Intelligence indicated that criminal syndicates involved in vehicle theft, car hijackings, and vehicle insurance fraud were allegedly colluding with corrupt law enforcement officials to facilitate the illegal movement of stolen and fraudulently obtained vehicles from South Africa into Mozambique.

According to the investigation, corrupt officials allegedly received financial gratification, with payments varying depending on the type of vehicle being allowed to cross the border without interception or arrest.

An enquiry was subsequently registered. Authorisation was obtained to conduct a covert operation.

Members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) in Nelspruit, supported by Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS), Crime Intelligence, and Surveillance teams, successfully executed the operation.

During the operation, the suspect, who was on duty at the time, allegedly accepted a gratification payment from an undercover agent.

The suspect was arrested at the Lebombo Port of Entry and found in possession of the operational funds amounting to R80 000.00, which were recovered during the arrest. A case of corruption has been registered for further investigation.

The identity of the accused is being withheld pending his first court appearance. The suspect is expected to appear before the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on 10 June 2026.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber, said the Hawks remain committed to rooting out corruption within law enforcement structures and ensuring that those who abuse positions of trust are held accountable.

He commended the team for their excellent work and trust this arrest sends out a stern warning to corrupt officials.

The police in Gauteng relentlessly crackdown on crimes of robbery with aggravating circumstances. This after two suspects were fatally wounded and unlicensed firearms recovered following a shootout with the police in Reiger Park.

On 08 June 2026, a team of law enforcement agencies operationalised information on suspects linked to hijackings and robbery of trucks and courier vehicles. One of the suspected vehicle was spotted in Boksburg and upon stopping it, the vehicle allegedly sped off. A high-speed chase and a shootout ensued. The suspects’ vehicle came into a standstill near an informal settlement and two of the suspects fled on foot into the informal settlement while two other suspects were fatally wounded inside the car. In the process, one of the police vehicles’ had its windscreen damaged from the gun shots. The members escaped unharmed and will be receiving a debriefing from the Employee Health and Wellness.

Two unlicensed firearms and a Mazda vehicle were recovered on the scene and further investigations led the team to a residential place in Germiston, believed to be a safe house for the suspects. There, the team recovered a Chevrolet Captiva SUV which was established to be stolen as per Booysens robbery case and a number of false registration number plates.

Further investigations are underway to link suspects to other crimes.

Firefighters were attacked while responding to a bushfire in Oaklands – KZN this afternoon (Tuesday, 09/06/2026).

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received an urgent request for assistance from a Firefighter and immediately dispatched all available Reaction Officers to the scene. On arrival at approximately 15:36, First Responders established that Emergency Personnel had been assaulted.

According to the Firefighters, they had responded to reports of a bushfire and commenced extinguishing the blaze (picture 4). While carrying out their duties, they approached a group of individuals after noticing they had attended to a similar incident in the area yesterday (Monday) and enquired about the cause of the fire.

The group, which included females, allegedly became hostile and assaulted the Firefighters while demanding that they stop extinguishing the vegetation fire. The Emergency Personnel retreated and requested assistance. The assailants fled upon noticing additional support arriving.

Reaction Officers subsequently established that the individuals were allegedly involved in drug dealing activities and had intentionally set the vegetation alight to create a clear passage for customers accessing the area from Moodley’s Lane in Oaklands – KZN.

No injuries were reported.

Media personality and self-proclaimed Amabhinca Nation president Ngizwe Mchunu says he believes he has apologised sincerely to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

This comes as additional charges have now been brought against him by Malema, escalating the ongoing legal dispute between the two.

He has filed an urgent contempt of court application at the High Court in Pretoria against Mchunu.

Mchunu says he has no issue with the new charges and maintains that his manner of apologising should not be mistaken for a lack of remorse.

He says that he remains confident the court will rule in his favour when the matter returns to court on June 17.

Mchunu says, “I don’t have a problem about the extra charges that were added by Mr Julius Malema against me. He looked at my face and thought I was not apologising, that was me, I can’t express myself differently, that is my culture, I can’t act differently when I am facing challenges. I hope that on the 17th of June the court will rule in my favour.”

Mchunu’s charges stems from viral remarks he made outside the Union Buildings in April, where he accused EFF Leader of protecting undocumented migrants and accepting millions of rands from alleged Nigerian drug cartels.

Meanwhile, legal Analyst Melusi Xulu has warned that Mchunu is legally skating on thin ice after the High Court in Pretoria found him guilty of contempt and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to comply with previous court orders.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s R1 million defamation case against Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President Kenny Kunene has been struck off the roll by the High Court in Johannesburg.

The ruling was made after Malema’s legal representative failed to comply with the directive of the Acting Deputy Judge President to submit some of their papers onto the online management system on time.

Kunene was sued by Malema over allegations he made on a podcast show. He claimed that Malema had received money from the late taxi boss, Mandla Msibi.

However, Malema’s legal representative plans to re-enroll the matter after fixing the procedural issue.

This was the interaction between Judge Leonard Twala and Malema’s legal representative, Advocate Mfesane ka Siboto.

Judge Twala: Was it uploaded on the 29th of April? When was it uploaded?

Advocate Mfesane ka Siboto: It was uploaded this morning at 08:40.

Allegations involving Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema have emerged in court papers filed by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in response to an urgent application brought by Crime Intelligence Deputy Head Major General Feroz Khan.

It is alleged that Khan and businessman Mohammad Sayed facilitated parliamentary questions by the EFF relating to former Inspector-General of Intelligence Dr Setlhomamaru Dintwe.

The commission claims that WhatsApp messages show Sayed forwarding exchanges with Malema regarding those questions.

According to the affidavit, the questions were intended to place Dintwe under pressure and “trap him in a lie.”
