Police say the suspects were allegedly preparing to hijack a truck along the N1 when officers moved in, leading to a shootout in which four suspects were wounded.

Police recovered several firearms, vehicles, a signal-jamming device and items including traffic police uniforms.

Gauteng Police Spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko says the suspects face multiple charges.

“During the operation, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, four pistols, five motor vehicles and a signal-jamming device. Other items seized include traffic police uniforms, reflector jackets, balaclavas, gloves and a cutting-grinder machine. Police have opened cases of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of traffic uniforms and possession of a signal-jamming device. Additional charges may be added as the investigation progresses. Suspects will appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon.”

The IEJ emphasised that relying on bank accounts to determine income is not enough for the department to make conclusions.

The IEJ legal representative, Advocate Jason Brickhill, told the court that it has never been prescriptive about the amount that should be paid as an SRD grant but has called on the government to consider the value of the grant.

Advocate Brickhill submitted that budget and affordability are cited as limitations, yet the SRD budget has never been fully spent since inception.

He argued that this cannot be used to justify the arbitrary exclusion of eligible applicants.

Brickhill accepted the R20 increase as a step forward but said more could be done to reach the poverty line.

The 22-year-old man, who uses a wheelchair, faces a charge of murder and attempted murder in relation to the case. He was shot and paralaysed in July last year. His legal representative argues that his human rights are infringed upon due to the conditions in prison. Defence Advocate Mike Maseti says from the time of the arrest the accused has not had proper medical assistance and this in turn has affected his dignity.

“As a consequence of his condition, he needs to have his mother with him on a 24-hour basis to monitor all his movements, to trigger the passing of urine and assist when the bowel movement is in place. So, in that sense, our application is that he be detained at Cecelia Makhiwane or Frere Hospital.”

Arendse: It’s too early to press the panic buttons

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse is confident that coach Miguel Cardoso will turn things around soon at the African champions.

Despite being third on the log table, Sundowns has been unconvincing in some matches so far this season as Cardoso is still experimenting with new combinations.

A section of the club’s supporters blames the frequent changes in the starting lineup for the inconsistent performances.

“It’s too early to press the panic button; things will improve,” shares Arendse, speaking to KickOff.

“I understand where Cardoso is coming from because you are working with a squad of players, including those who participated in the World Cup, and at the same time, you want to give them opportunities.

“Otherwise, when are you going to give them a chance? In what game? It’s the right move that he did on Sunday against Sekhukhune United to see clearly the depth of his team.

“It’s normal for any coach to include players who haven’t played often. Cardoso is likely reviewing his options, ticking off names of those who can help the team this season.

“You can definitely see that Cardoso has a plan going forward, so it’s too early to push the panic button.”

The Brazilians face AmaZulu FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday at 19:30.

Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United will meet for a second time in four days as they lock horns in a Betway Premiership clash on Tuesday evening.

The two sides locked horns at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, with Pirates claiming a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final.

Pirates now resume their league campaign, where they currently sit top of the standings after defeating Chippa United in their last outing.

The Buccaneers will be without attacking midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, who has secured a move to Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) have provided an update on the progress of VAR after receiving R20 million from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC).

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie expressed frustration with the delays of the technology after transferring millions to SAFA.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) wishes to provide an update to its members, stakeholders, the football fraternity and the public on the status of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Project and the R20 million received from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC).

In April 2026, DSAC transferred R20 million to SAFA to support the implementation of VAR in South African football. Prior to receiving the funding, SAFA had already conducted a comprehensive technical evaluation of VAR technology and service providers and identified three preferred VAR providers. No contractual agreements were entered into by SAFA.

At its meeting of 9–10 May 2026, the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) approved the implementation of the VAR Project in principle. However, before any procurement process or contractual commitments could proceed, the NEC resolved that the project budget, cost assumptions and procurement considerations be subjected to further review by the Finance Committee and a dedicated task team, in accordance with SAFA’s governance and policy requirements.

SAFA has also consulted with the Premier Soccer League (PSL), through the Joint Liaison Committee (JLC), on the proposed implementation framework. The VAR Project Team presented to the JLC and the PSL Executive Committee as part of the stakeholder consultation process. SAFA acknowledges that the governance, financial verification and due diligence processes have taken longer than initially anticipated. However, it is important to emphasise that the R20 million received from DSAC has not been spent. The full amount remains secure in a separate account, together with the interest accrued, pending the completion of the outstanding governance, budget verification and procurement processes.

Following engagement with DSAC on 18 August, the Department has granted SAFA a final 21-day extension to conclude the outstanding processes and submit a comprehensive report on the project, including the recommendations arising from the review and confirmation of the funds held. SAFA appreciates the Minister’s and DSAC’s continued support and constructive engagement. The Association remains committed to ensuring that VAR is implemented in a manner that is transparent, financially responsible, compliant with governance and procurement requirements and sustainable.

Matlala was answering questions related to his relationship with Maumela after attempting to use Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigations as an excuse to avoid responding to the commission.

He argued that he could be a suspect in the investigation by the SIU which was used to get an SIU Tribunal order for the freezing of Maumela’s assets. He also referenced media articles that claimed he was under investigation.

However, the commission showed Matlala that the evidence he submitted did not suggest he was a suspect, with him confirming that he had not been approached by an investigator in relation to this. He conceded that no investigator had approached him in the matter.

Maumela is linked to the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal as the alleged head of a syndicate that irregularly secured more than R400m in fraudulent hospital contracts in which more than R2bn was stolen through dubious tender schemes by three syndicates.

The SIU traced 41 suppliers or service providers linked to Maumela; three of the companies that were awarded contracts to the value of R13.5m in this syndicate are linked to Matlala.

Matlala told the commission that he met Maumela around 2015 and they became friends due to their passion for sports cars.

“I used to like his car and he liked mine,” he said, adding that they used to meet at a restaurant in Sandton.

Matlala said in about 2018 and 2019 they started participating in business ventures in which they would share 10% of the profits of their investments.

Explaining their business model, Matlala said: “[When] me and Mr Maumela wanted to supply medical consumables to the department of health, we would approach someone who supplies consumables and tell them we would put money upfront in his account.

“Should I get the RFQ first, I would go to that supplier and request the stock for a certain amount of money and he would provide. Then after getting paid, I would return the money that I had invested,” he said.
