He says South Africans must not be misled by the 30 June deadline.

Ramaphosa made these remarks on the sidelines of the official Youth Day Commemoration at Nasrec in Johannesburg

A 30 June deadline set by some groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

“No South African must take any action against any person from any of our African sister countries. That is the responsibility of government and government officials,” Ramaphosa said.

“So the so-called 30th of June, in my view, it’s not an event that is even necessary because we are addressing the challenges that our people are facing and we must not allow South Africans to be duped and to be misled by those who want to foster instability in our country and we will not allow that.”

In May, Ramaphosa launched a review into the report which found that he may have a case to answer regarding the February 2020 robbery of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.

The review bid, which is set to be heard in September, seeks to invalidate the Section 89 report itself, as well as any steps taken by the National Assembly pursuant to the report.

Ramaphosa, in his latest filing, says he has no option but to institute the current application due to the possibility that the Impeachment Committee will begin the impeachment hearings before the court has made a decision on the review bid.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly’s Rules Committee has referred rules governing its process of impeachment of a president back to the sub-rules committee for refining.

The rules are being amended in line with a Constitutional Court order handed down in May on the Section 89 Independent Panel report’s findings.

Among others, MPs have questions about whether a President can be impeached for direct conduct only or also indirect conduct.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza says more consultation needs to be done before the amendments can be adopted by the Rules Committee.

Phala Phala Saga | Impeachment Committee to adopt terms of reference on 26 June: 

The 31-member committee will only have one order of business: to elect a chairperson.

The impeachment committee was established a week ago after the Constitutional Court in May compelled Parliament to take steps to consider misconduct allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

More white South Africans could be heading to the US after the Trump administration proposed plans to admit an additional 10,000 Afrikaner asylum seekers from South Africa, raising the refugee cap for this group to 17,500 in 2026.

Afrikaner refugees

The move comes as arrivals near the current ceiling of 7 500, with Washington citing an “emergency refugee situation” linked to false claims of racial persecution and threats to farming communities.

The Trump administration’s decision, unveiled on 19 May, is expected to cost $100 million and follows a February 2025 executive order prioritising Afrikaner resettlement while cutting aid to South Africa.

Afrikaners now account for 99% of refugee admissions since October 2025, highlighting the programme’s sharp focus compared with restrictions on other nationalities.

Trump clear about Afrikaners

In response to questions from The Citizen, the US State Department said the Trump administration is clear about the resettlement of Afrikaners in the US.

“President Trump has been very clear that we are prioritising the resettlement of Afrikaners in South Africa who are escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination, a U.S. policy indicated in E.O. 14204, a State Department spokesperson told The Citizen.

“Determinations on refugee admissions are up to the president.”

False claims

US officials falsely claim Afrikaners face race‑based discrimination, escalating hostility and targeted violence, particularly against farmers.

The State Department said the expansion was necessary to protect lives and uphold humanitarian obligations.

Trump has justified the administration’s decision to resettle Afrikaners in the US by citing false claims that “a genocide is taking place” in South Africa and that “White farmers are being brutally killed and their land confiscated.”

Refugee applications

Pretoria criticised the decision by the US to prioritise refugee applications from white Afrikaners, saying claims of a white genocide have been widely discredited and lack reliable evidence.

The government argues that land reform laws apply broadly and that violent crime is a national challenge.

Roelf Meyer to reset relations

Earlier this week, veteran political negotiator and South Africa’s newly appointed ambassador to Washington, Roelf Meyer, vowed to reset strained ties with the US, stressing that trade relations must be improved while acknowledging the political sensitivities around issues such as farm violence, Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Afrikaner refugee admissions.

The 78-year-old Meyer presented his credentials to Trump late on Thursday, 21 May 2026.

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Meyer as Pretoria’s ambassador to the US in April 2026.

Meyer said that after two weeks of “preparatory work” in Washington, he will deliver a full assessment to Pretoria on the state of relations.

Five tasks

He stressed that trade must be the immediate priority:

“The most pressing issue is improving trade relations between the two countries. If there are inhibitors to success, we have to address them one by one.”

Meyer pointed directly to the “five asks” raised by US Ambassador Brent Bozell on his arrival in South Africa, which include concerns over BEE, expropriation without compensation, violent crimes against farmers, and Pretoria’s foreign policy alignments.

COMMENTS:

The growing list of senior law enforcement officials facing arrest, investigation or criminal allegations paints a deeply troubling picture for South Africa’s policing and criminal justice structures.

Many of these cases involve allegations linked to corruption, organised crime, precious metals syndicates and abuse of state resources and interference in investigations.

The arrests have intensified public concern over the extent to which criminal networks may have infiltrated sections of law enforcement agencies.

While arrests do not amount to guilt and all accused remain innocent until proven guilty in court, the repeated implication of senior-ranking officials continues to erode public trust in institutions tasked with fighting crime and corruption.

The developments also place renewed focus on the work of oversight bodies and commissions investigating corruption and political interference within the criminal justice system.

Sources say more arrests are likely over the coming weeks.

Impact-based warnings

The weather service has issued several warnings for severe weather conditions across parts of the Western and Eastern Cape until Tuesday.

An Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall remains in place over parts of the Western Cape until Tuesday, with flooding of roads, bridges and settlements, mudslides and dangerous river conditions expected in areas including Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Drakenstein, Breede Valley and Witzenberg.

Orange Level 6 warnings have been issued for flooding in parts of the West Coast and Overberg, while damaging winds and waves are expected along the coast from Lambert’s Bay to Cannon Rocks until Tuesday.

An Orange Level 5 warning for damaging interior winds is in effect over parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, with possible damage to homes, falling trees, power outages and some road closures.

Yellow Level 4 and 2 warnings remain in place for damaging winds, rough seas, localised flooding, snowfall and storm surges across parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape until Tuesday.

The party’s spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, on Saturday said the party will submit a motion of no confidence proposal with the hope of removing Ramaphosa as head of state.

“Following yesterday’s Constitutional Court judgment, the MK Party considers it necessary to formally express our intention to file this motion.

“In light of the constitutional importance of a motion of no confidence, as well as the considerable political pressures surrounding such proceedings, we have written to the Speaker of the National Assembly requesting that the motion be conducted by secret ballot.

“This is to safeguard both the independence and integrity of Members’ votes and to ensure they can exercise their responsibilities freely and effectively,” said Ndhlela.

Prima Facie evidence

He said the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the prima facie evidence relating to the robbery on Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in 2020 warrants a full investigation. He said this casts a “very dark” cloud over the President.

“The MK Party, together with millions of South Africans have totally lost confidence in the current President of South Africa, Mr Ramaphosa. It is only appropriate that we demand his resignation and impeachment,” said Ndhlela.

“The MK Party stands ready to debate this motion at the earliest possible time,” he added.

Meanwhile, political parties such as the EFF have called for Ramaphosa to resign before parliament’s impeachment committee begins its work.

“Now it’s for Ramaphosa to use his conscience and resign as the president of South Africa and go and face impeachment. We cannot face a president who is doing the work of being a president and doing the work of impeachment.

“He must concentrate on one; he can’t concentrate on the one of being a president, he has to concentrate on impeachment. This again goes to the doorstep of the ANC; they must choose South Africa, or they must choose Ramaphosa,” he said.

He was speaking outside the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on Friday.

The Constitutional court has set aside a 2022 parliamentary decision to block parliament from further probing allegations of money laundering that Ramaphosa faces after $580,000 was stolen on his game farm.

Will Ramaphosa jump ship?

Opposition parties such as the EFF want an impeachment committee formed as soon as possible by parliament to get to the bottom of the facts behind the source of these funds.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has always maintained that the funds were proceeds of the sale of game.

The Ghanaian government recently wrote to the AU to share its concern about “the recurrence of xenophobic incidents in the Republic of South Africa, which have regrettably resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of investment and continue to pose a serious risk to the safety and well-being of many African nationals residing in South Africa.”

“It is particularly troubling that manifestations of xenophobia, including violent attacks against fellow Africans, have persisted in recent years. This development is especially concerning when viewed in the light of the longstanding solidarity demonstrated by African states in support of the struggle against apartheid and South Africa’s subsequent democratic transformation,” it added.

It said the attacks were a challenge to “continental unity” and “a clear violation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

It asked that the matter be put on the agenda at the AU’s upcoming Mid-Year Coordination Meeting to be held next month in Egypt. The event is expected to be attended by African Heads of State.

Tit for tat? South Africa wants its own item added

The South African international relations ministry said on Friday that “sporadic incidents of confrontation against some immigrants, among them citizens of fellow African states residing in South Africa, by sections in our communities earlier this month” were dealt with and condemned by the South African government.

It added that South Africa remains open to continued diplomatic engagement and constructive dialogue with any African country on their concerns, and so found the decision by Ghana “to escalate concerns about irregular migration to the African Union regrettable.”

The ministry said that should the item be placed on the agenda, South Africa would propose its own item on “the push and pull factors of migration, including good governance, rule of law, and democracy, in accordance with the Constitutive Act of the AU.”

This was seen as a reference to concerns about governance failures by African states across the continent that have driven people to flee their home countries, including to South Africa.

“South Africa will continue to lead with a Pan-African heart. Our commitment is to solidarity, the rule of law, and the safety of all who reside within our borders. Migration must be managed through cooperation, compassion and continental responsibility,” minister Ronald Lamola added.

How many immigrants are streaming into SA?

Migration is a hot topic globally, and, as a major economic hub on the African continent, South Africa has seen a large influx of foreign nationals for decades.

Stats SA’s analysis of, among other sources, the 2022 census found that more than 2.3 million foreign nationals live in South Africa, with most in Gauteng. An earlier report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimated the figure to be around 4.2 million (or 7.2% of the population).

One estimate, based on Stats SA projections in 2018, found an average of roughly 200,000 migrants entering the country each year.

Most immigrants come from the Southern African Development Community, a region of 16 countries surrounding South Africa that links it to other regions of the continent.

Among these SADC nations are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Where do most of those deported come from?

While many of these immigrants are legal, thousands have fraudulent or missing documentation.

The Department of Home Affairs said that nearly 7 400 Zimbabweans were deported in the 2022/23 financial year, 68% of the total number of people deported in that period.

This was followed, on the list of countries recorded, by Malawi (3 020).

159 people were deported to Tanzania, 86 to Nigeria, 54 to DRC, and 12 to Ghana.

Most of those who submitted false documentation in their visa applications were from Nigeria (12 177).

1 296 Ghanians filed false documents in their applications during that same period.

President Cyril Ramaphosa respects the Constitutional Court’s judgment and reaffirms his commitment to the Constitution, the independence of the Judiciary and the rule of law.
