Sundowns Pull Six-Points Clear Amid Bucs’ CAF Excursion

Mamelodi Sundowns opened a six-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership after defeating struggling Siwelele FC 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Coach Miguel Cardoso re-shuffled the pack after the weekend’s win over Golden Arrows, as Kutlwano Letlhaku came in for his first start of the season alongside recalls for Sphelele Mkhulise, Zuko Mdunyelwa, Malibongwe Khoza and Aubrey Modiba.
Caretaker coach Godfrey Mosoetsa decided to switch things up from his predecessor Lehlohonolo Seema, as goalkeeper Wandile Mthombeni made his debut for the club, while Neo Mokhachane and Selaelo Rasebotja got their first starts for the campaign.
The occasion certainly did not faze Mthombeni, who showed early signs of being comfortable around his 18-yard area, which included pulling off a vital save to deny Sundowns’ Brayan Leon in a one-on-one situation.
The Brazilians dominated throughout the first half despite the flurry of changes, although Siwelele were quite happy to sit back and soak up the pressure, as Thabiso Sesane and his defence did well to deal with all the balls coming into the box.

However, Siwelele and Mthombeni’s resistance eventually broke just before the hour mark when Teboho Mokoena’s powerful strike cannoned off the crossbar and back into the box, where Letlhaku was on hand to slot it into an empty net to open his account for the campaign.
Cardoso had no desire to take the foot off the pedal as he decided to throw on Siyanda Ndlovu and Marcelo Allende on 65 minutes, while Tashreeq Matthews was also given some minutes by replacing Antonio van Wyk a few minutes later.
The changes paid off with 12 minutes to play when Ndlovu made the points safe by latching onto a poor back pass from Siwelele’s Baliti and showed the composure to slot past Mthombeni, who the picked the ball out of his net despite an inspired performance.
The visitors, meanwhile, offered resistance at the other end of the field as goalkeeper Ronwen Williams enjoyed a quiet 90 minutes to pick up his third clean sheet of the league season, as Sundowns bagged a third goal in second-half stoppage time thanks to a lovely dinked finish from Matthews.
