The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is urging motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution as steady to torrential rains continue across large parts of the province, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The heavy rains have resulted in wet and slippery roads, reduced visibility and an increased risk of crashes, particularly in areas experiencing persistent downpours.

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has urged motorists to slow down, increase following distances, use headlights and avoid unnecessary travel where conditions become particularly dangerous.

“Safety must remain our first priority. We are appealing to motorists not to underestimate the conditions on our roads. Heavy rains can quickly change the driving environment, and motorists must adjust their speed and behaviour accordingly,” said MEC Nqatha.
