Why Maboe ‘can only get better from here’ at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe says he is determined to continue to improve at the club after a late start in his first season at Amakhosi.

Maboe had a slow start at Chiefs after he was signed as a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Mamelodi Sundowns, ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 31-year-old arrived at The Glamour Boys with fitness issues and missed a third of the season, as he made his debut in only the 11th game of the league campaign after coming off the bench in a 4-1 thrashing of Orbit College at the beginning of November 2025.

After making a solid start to the current term, scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw with Richards Bay, Maboe, speaking to Journalists at the club’s open media day, says he is determined to keep on improving.

“I still want to improve, I still want more. I’m looking forward to building on the performances that I had last season and the good start I’ve had this season. You know I can only get better from here, I always demand more from myself,” Maboe said at the Chiefs village.

“I believe that there is always room for improvement, so going into this season, I am definitely looking to improve my stats, with more goals, more assists, more box entries, so I am looking forward to the season,” the former Sundowns midfielder said.

Chiefs have dropped points twice in their first four matches, both draws against The Brazilians and The Natal Rich Boyz, with at least a goal each conceded characterized by goalkeeping errors from goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

“I think also the goals we concede, we need to be a bit more harder on ourselves and demand more from ourselves,” Maboe said, looking back at the goals they conceded, which cost them points.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder also looked ahead of their upcoming Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele on Sunday evening at Dobsonville Stadium.

“It’s a game that we want to win but also knowing that Siwelele has not won any game this season, so it’s going to be a very tricky game. I think they beat us last season in the second round, so we know what we will be up against. It’s our home game, so we have to put smiles on our fans’ faces,” Maboe concluded.
