Confusion and disappointment on DDC season delay
Sep 2, 2026 – 08:25 pm
By Sipho Mlotha
Stakeholders in South African football should do everything in their power to save the DStv Diski Challenge from being another failed project, according to a Kaizer Chiefs coach.
The postponement of the start of the Reserve League’s 2026/27 season has left many coaches confused, with no full explanation provided by the PSL.
The League has issued a circular confirming that the kick-off date for the new season will now be 26 September.
With MultiChoice and DStv experiencing heavy financial restructuring and ongoing corporate takeover by Canal+, the sponsorship and the future of the League remain in doubt.
According to Chiefs’ Diski Challenge head coach Vela Khumalo, an end to this conveyor belt would be sad news for local football.
“As coaches, we are also in the dark. We were sent an email informing us about the new kick-off date, but why? We also don’t really know; nothing more was explained,” explains Khumalo, speaking to KickOff.
“We had already received a fixture [list] for the 2026/27 season, but now, of course, it will be changed since the kick-off has been moved to the 26th of September.
“I really don’t know what is happening; it is very disappointing. By the beginning of this week, we were ready to begin the season, but all of a sudden everything has changed; we are not playing.
“It’s disappointment on its own. If the DDC was to vanish, or not exist anymore, let’s say from next season or in the near future, that would be a big loss when it comes to development in the country.
“Most of our boys who are stars today in the Betway Premiership and abroad came from this league. So, it won’t be a good thing,” he adds.
Orlando Pirates are the reigning champions and, as a reward for their efforts, underwent a nine-day tour of the Netherlands, from 14 to 23 August.
