Maboe: It’s a confidence-booster

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has opened up on scoring his first goal for the club and return of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana head coach.

Maboe scored for the first time in the colors of Amakhosi, as he found the back of the net via a penalty to restore parity, making it 1-1 for The Glamour Boys in the Betway Premiership encounter against Richards Bay, which ended 2-2 on Saturday.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder had not scored any professional goal since being among the goal-scorers for The Brazilians in their 6-1 hammering of NB La Masia in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 back in February 2024.

Speaking to Journalists at Chiefs’ Open Media Day at the village in Naturena on Wednesday, ahead of their Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele on Sunday, the 31-year-old was aware that he had not scored a league goal since January 2021 when he scored for former club Sundowns in a 2-0 win over Chippa United.

“I have not scored in the Premier League since 2021 if I’m not mistaken and having to find the back of the net in a game gives me a lot of confidence going into the remaining games of the season,” Maboe said.

“Obviously I’m looking forward to scoring more for the team and ja, a confidence-booster honestly.”

The former Durban City midfielder was in the fringes of the Bafana selections towards the end of former coach Hugo Broos tenure, after making the preliminary squad but missed out on the final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the re-appointment of Mosimane, Maboe also congratulated the experienced coach, whom he worked with at Sundowns.

“Firstly congratulations to coach Pitso, I’m very happy for him. I think he’s going to do well in the national team. He’s a coach that knows the league so well. He knows how South African players are,” Maboe added.
