Broos on Pitso and Bafana: ‘They will go back five years’

Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed what could test Pitso Mosimane should he return to the Bafana hot seat, with a warning over the influence surrounding the national team.

Mosimane has already been approved by the SAFA NEC to take over the Bafana job, with the national team preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

Broos spent five years in charge of Bafana and established himself as one of the most successful coaches in the country’s history.

He led South Africa to a third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON before guiding the team to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, their first-ever appearance in that stage of the tournament.

Now, Broos has revealed one of the key factors behind his success with Bafana, while highlighting the challenges that can come with outside influence around the national team.

“Maybe so. You know, South Africa still doesn’t have a manager. The candidate is Pitso Mosimane, a successful South African coach,” Broos told Het Nieuwsblad.

“However, they know that if he comes, they will go back five years in time.

“Club owners and agents calling managers to influence the squad. I kicked them all out. If one called, I said bluntly: ‘I don’t talk with agents’.”

Should Mosimane take over, it would mark his second stint as Bafana coach after previously leading the national team between 2010 and 2012.

In addition, the three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach has also previously served as a Bafana assistant and caretaker coach.
