Johannesburg emergency services have placed disaster teams on high alert on Saturday as more severe thunderstorms and heavy rain threaten to lash the city over the weekend.
The official alert follows a destructive night in Linden, where eight families had to be evacuated from an apartment block after heavy winds ripped off a large section of the building’s roof.
As heavy winds swept across Joburg, uprooting trees and scattering debris, some residents of a Linden apartment block could hear metal clanging.
Video footage taken from the neighbouring building shows part of the roof lifting, before being ripped away, exposing bare rafters.
When Eyewitness News visited the apartment, insulation and other debris were scattered around the premises.
Residents of the decades-old building declined interviews, but confirmed no injuries were reported.
While they work to restore the premises, the city’s emergency services remain on high alert.
