FIFA Steps In As Rollers Fail To Pay Ex-Tuks Player

Botswana Premier League side Township Rollers have been hit with a FIFA registration ban following a dispute involving former University of Pretoria player Thabiso Mokenkoane.

The Siya crew understands that FIFA has implemented a ban preventing the club from registering new players at both international and national level after the club failed to comply with a financial obligation arising from a dispute with Mokenkoane.

FIFA documents seen by the Siya crew show that the matter relates to a previous decision in favour of the player, with the registration ban set to remain in place until the amount due is paid, subject to a maximum of three entire and consecutive registration periods.

Mokenkoane, who previously played for Tuks in South Africa, had his contract with Rollers terminated last season and subsequently challenged the decision.

Taelo Motloung, Secretary-General of the Footballers Union of South Africa (FUSA), explained how the matter reached FIFA.

“Thabiso Mokenkoane had his contract terminated by Township Rollers last season, and he challenged the decision. He came to FUSA for assistance, and we were keen to help.

“We wrote a letter of demand to the club requesting them to pay what was due to the player, but we received no co-operation. We ended up taking the matter to FIFA, and FIFA ruled in favour of the player.

“The club hasn’t yet paid and now FIFA has ruled that they be banned from signing and registering new players with their league,” said Motloung.

FIFA has also requested the Botswana Football Association to immediately implement the national-level registration ban against Township Rollers, if this has not already been done.

The development could have an impact on the club’s recruitment plans, with the ban remaining active until the outstanding amount owed to Mokenkoane is settled or the maximum period of three consecutive registration windows is reached.

Mokenkoane’s case highlights the role of FUSA in assisting players with contractual disputes, including matters involving clubs outside the country.
