Cedric Kaze’s red card late in Sekhukhune United’s defeat to Orlando Pirates came under the recommendation of fourth official Akhona Makalima.
Kaze was shown his marching orders after an evening spent having engagements with Makalima.

Just before the visitors made two changes – during which the hosts made three – there was a long delay stretching several minutes, with Makalima flooded with placing the correct numbers on the substitution boards.

This then appeared to irritate Kaze, who needed his changes to be made quickly with the game sitting with under 20 minutes remaining.
Unfortunately, through all that, the Burundian gaffer ended up red-carded by referee Philangenkosi Khumalo at the instruction of Makalima.
Kaze took a while to walk, protesting while he was being sent off but was ultimately escorted to a seat in the stands just behind his team’s bench.
“As to what happened on the bench for our coach to get a red card, it was just a moment of misunderstanding between the fourth official and the referee.
“The honest question that our coach asked was, ‘Why are you taking so long?’
“But from whatsoever frustration from the fourth official, she ended up telling the referee that the coach is using uncalled-for language,” explains Masehe.
Sekhukhune arrived at the famous Soweto venue with a game plan that could have yielded results on another night but were unfortunate to leave empty-handed after goals in either half by Boitumelo Radiopane and Oswin Appollis.
Paulus Masehe, the Sekhukhune assistant coach, noted that their intention was to drag the game and suck the hosts into desperation while aiming to get in around them.
“Playing against Orlando Pirates doesn’t change as they won’t change how they play because they don’t adapt to anyone,” points out Masehe.
“For us, the missing puzzle in how we play is in being clinical in the final third.
“…there is a certain game model that the coach has introduced that is new,” he says.
Babina Noko will be back at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday for the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final.
