Chicago Fire FC coach Gregg Berhalter has issued an injury update on Mbekezeli Mbokazi, with the player tipped to possibly return to action earlier than initially expected.
The South African had previously been ruled out for the rest of the season after he sustained a thigh tear ahead of the resumption of the 2026 Major League Soccer campaign.
Berhalter initially described the situation as a tough one, especially after the Bafana Bafana star’s impressive showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, his absence has not hit the side as hard as they perhaps would have initially expected, with the Chicago outfit currently on a run of seven consecutive matches across all competitions without suffering a defeat.
Although Mbokazi’s presence would likely be a boost for the side, Berhalter revealed that the boost may come sooner than anticipated.
Speaking after his team’s 1-1 draw against New York Red Bulls over the weekend, Berhalter offered an encouraging update on the defender’s recovery.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter said, per GOAL.
“There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
