Two people have been apprehended in connection with the murder of well-known boxer Zolani Tete, who was shot dead in Mdantsane on Friday.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana said the two, aged 30 and 22, were apprehended in KuGompo City on Saturday following what police described as a swift, intelligence-driven operation involving several law enforcement units.

A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with him was wounded in the attack.

Gantana said the two people were being questioned in connection with Tete’s murder and the attempted murder of the woman.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details regarding the motive or the circumstances surrounding the arrests at this time,” Gantana said.

She said investigators were pursuing several leads and warned that further arrests were expected.

“Investigators are following up on several leads, and more arrests are imminent.”

Gantana cautioned against speculation about the killing while the investigation was under way.

“We caution the public and the media against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this may compromise the investigation and the integrity of the upcoming court proceedings.”

Police praised the team responsible for the arrests and appealed to anyone with credible information about the shooting to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Gantana said further information would be released as the investigation progressed.
