Pressure? Gallants Make Mohafe Call After Sundowns Loss

Marumo Gallants have no intention of making a knee-jerk decision on the future of head coach Phuti Mohafe despite a difficult start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign, the Siya crew understands.
Gallants currently sit at the bottom of the league standings after collecting just one point from their opening three matches, having suffered two defeats and played to one draw.

Their latest setback came on Wednesday when they were beaten 2-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns, leaving the team still searching for their first victory of the new campaign.
However, indications are that Mohafe’s position is not under threat at this stage.
Sources close to the club have indicated that the Gallants management remains fully behind the coach and believes he is the right man to lead the team, with the club prepared to give him the necessary support as he looks to turn their fortunes around.
Despite the results, there has been encouragement internally over aspects of Gallants’ performances, particularly the team’s approach to possession and their ability to create opportunities.
The feeling is that the team has shown signs of playing attractive football and that the immediate focus is on improving their efficiency in front of goal and making better use of the chances being created.
That could be crucial when Gallants return to action on Tuesday, August 25, when they welcome TS Galaxy in their next Betway Premiership fixture.
The match represents an opportunity for Mohafe’s side to finally get their first win on the board and begin moving away from the foot of the table.
The club’s current stance is also notable given Gallants’ history of making swift changes in the technical area.
Mohafe only arrived at the club ahead of the new season after making the move from Polokwane City, where he had established himself as a coach capable of making the Limpopo side competitive and regularly challenging for a place in the top eight.
Gallants chairman Abram Sello previously explained why the club opted for Mohafe, highlighting the coach’s track record and the belief that he could help the club achieve its ambitions.
Speaking to the media at the launch of the 2026 Mafori Cup in July, Sello acknowledged the difficult nature of coaching and the short periods some coaches are afforded at clubs, but stressed that Gallants wanted a coach who was committed to the project and whom the club could also commit to.
Sello also pointed to the patience the club intended to show Mohafe, describing him as an experienced local coach who understood what he was doing.

His record of guiding teams to top-eight finishes was another factor behind the appointment, with Gallants themselves targeting a top-eight position.
That previous show of faith is now being put to the test following the club’s slow start.
