BREAKING: Pirates confirm a shock exit

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of Deano van Rooyen, with the defender and the club agreeing to part ways by mutual consent.

Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers in August 2024 from Stellenbosch FC after impressing during his time with the Cape Winelands outfit.

However, his time at the Sea Robbers was disrupted by injuries, which limited his involvement at various stages.

Moreover, the arrival of players such as Kamogelo Sebelebele has also increased competition for places in the squad.

Now, the 29-year-old’s time at the Soweto giants has come to an end, with Pirates confirming his departure on Friday morning.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” Pirates stated.

“The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career.

“Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, arriving as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership. At the Club, he delivered exactly what was asked of him.

“Whether starting or coming off the bench, Deano carried himself as a model professional throughout his time at the club – where he recorded over 50 appearances.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Deano for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Considering his experience and the reputation he built during his time at Stellenbosch and Pirates, Van Rooyen is unlikely to be short of suitors.

The defender has shown his capabilities at Premiership level and could attract interest from clubs looking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
