Khuliso Mudau suffered a serious injury during Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld, an injury that could effectively end his season.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed the severity of the injury in his post-match media briefing, revealing that Mudau will undergo specialist consultation and surgery to begin the recovery process.
“Unfortunately, today we got a severe injury to Kuliso Mudau. He will be out for sure for a long, long, long, long time. It’s an Achilles rupture, so tomorrow he will be seen by the specialist and surgeon and the day after that, so that we can start the recovery process. But that we can’t control.
“It wasn’t even an action, he was alone. So there was no contact; it was not a tackle with an opponent. It happens, as accidents happen in car races also; in football, sometimes injuries like this happen. We work to avoid them, but we don’t control [it],” Cardoso told the media after the match.
The nature of the injury makes it particularly unfortunate. Mudau was not involved in a challenge or physical contact with an opponent when the rupture occurred. The non-contact nature of Achilles injuries often makes them unpredictable and impossible to prevent, even with the best medical protocols in place.
For Sundowns, losing Mudau creates an immediate problem in defence. The 31-year-old has been a cornerstone of their backline, providing both defensive solidity and attacking thrust from right-back. Finding adequate cover for the remainder of the season becomes a priority for Cardoso and his technical team.

The timing is equally problematic for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who will now be without one of his most reliable defenders for upcoming international fixtures. Mudau has established himself as a regular starter for the national team, and his absence will force Broos to reassess his defensive options.
Achilles ruptures typically require a minimum recovery period of eight months, though some players have needed up to a year before returning to full fitness. The psychological challenge of such a lengthy rehabilitation can be as demanding as the physical recovery itself.
