Grant Kekana loves a choreographed goal celebration, and the return of Cassius Mailula means the Mamelodi Sundowns defender is likely spend more time dancing at the corner flag this season.
Kekana has lauded the return of the striker, who had a difficult spell abroad since leaving in 2023 to join Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. The way he has started at Sundowns is as if he never left. With two goals in three matches so far, there’s good reason for everyone associated with Sundowns to be excited and perhaps opponents should be worried.
Mailula scored the winning goal which sent Sundowns into the MTN8 semi-finals as they knocked out Polokwane City in the quarterfinals, and then came off the bench to score a goal which sealed a valuable point away to Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership over the weekend. Impact from the word go, and if anyone remembers what Malula’s first spell at Sundowns was like, then there’s more from where the goals came from.
Addressing the media at a press conference held at Chloorkop ahead of Wednesday’s Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Stadium, Kekana expressed his delight at having the striker back in the team and is confident that more goals will be coming from the player well known as ‘Cash’.
Obviously a good addition for us. We’ve always loved cash, he’s always done the the business for us and we are happy that he is scoring again. His confidence is coming back and it wasn’t difficult for him to gel when he was here, most of us are still here.
“Quality player and we know that he is going to be banging a lot of goals this season. We just need to make sure his confidence is back and he keeps striking for us. We are happy with ‘Cash’.”
Mailula has certainly raised his hand to start Sundowns’ next match against Gallants. Mailula has come on as a substitute in three of Sundowns’ matches this season.
