Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has singled out an Amakhosi midfielder for praise after a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Soweto giants kept their spot at the top of the Betway Premiership table with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Masandawana at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

New signing Lalangelihle Phili opened the scoring in the first half before the visitors levelled matters through returnee Cassius Mailula.

Reviewing the tense encounter on SABC Sport, Khumalo heaped praise on in-form midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

“He made a lot of difference in that midfield, and I just hope and pray that in the next coming weeks he can keep the very same form,” Khumalo said.

“When you have a player like that, it frees up players like [Mfundo] Vilakazi, [Mduduzi] Shabalala.

“To be honest, they (critics) always say he is the wrong one for Kaizer Chiefs. Yes, maybe he had some bad games, but today he made a lot of difference in that midfield.

“Look at the fouls he drew and managed to get for Kaizer Chiefs,” he went on.

The draw meant both giants maintained their unbeaten starts to the new season, with Amakhosi boasting a record of two wins and a draw from their three matches, while Sundowns have a single win and a draw from two matches.

Next up for the men in Gold and Black is a trip to Durban, where they take on Richards Bay FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium next Wednesday.
