Pitso’s Technical Team Headache: Mosimane Must Rebuild Backroom Staff For Bafana Bafana Project

Pitso Mosimane faces an intriguing challenge as he prepares to assemble his Bafana Bafana technical team, with key members of his usual backroom staff now contracted to Saudi Arabian club Al Fateh.

Maahier Davids, who has worked closely with Mosimane at several clubs, has been appointed as an assistant coach at Al Fateh.

Kyle Solomon has also joined the Saudi outfit as a video analyst, while former Bafana Bafana strength and conditioning coach Kopano Melesi has taken up a role at the club.

The timing is significant. Mosimane was officially approved as Bafana’s new head coach by SAFA’s National Executive Committee at an extraordinary meeting on 8 August, with the incoming coach previously expected to bring his established technical team consisting of Kabelo Rangoaga as fitness and conditioning coach, Musi Matlaba as performance and data analyst, Solomon in analyst and operational support, and Davids as assistant coach.

However, with Davids and Solomon now committed to Al Fateh, Mosimane will need to reconfigure his technical setup for the national team role.

The Siya crew has reported that Mosimane could retain the services of long-serving assistant coach Helman Mkhalele in his Bafana technical team, despite a number of resignations within the national team setup following Hugo Broos’ departure.

Mkhalele has been part of the Bafana coaching staff since 2020 and his institutional knowledge and familiarity with the current Bafana setup make his retention a sensible move.

The former Bafana winger was part of the technical team that helped guide South Africa to World Cup qualification for the first time in 24 years and a historic round-of-16 appearance in Mexico.

Retaining Mkhalele would provide continuity between the Broos era and Mosimane’s new cycle, particularly given the success achieved under the Belgian’s tenure.

The question now is who will fill the remaining positions. With Davids and Solomon unavailable, Mosimane will need to identify new personnel for key roles or promote from within SAFA’s existing structures.

Mosimane is expected to finalise his technical team structure ahead of Bafana’s next assignment as preparations begin for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
