A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Reiger Park in connection with the murders of two Anti-Gang Unit officers and two women earlier this month.

The man was arrested on Sunday afternoon following a tracing operation involving the Hawks, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, the Anti-Gang Unit and the police’s Flying Squad.

SA Police Service (SAPS) national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrest followed information provided by members of the Reiger Park community.

“This arrest is not only a victory for SAPS; it is also a demonstration of the power of a community that refuses to be silenced by criminals,” Mathe said.

She said the community’s assistance had helped investigators trace the suspect.

The latest arrest brings the number of suspects arrested in connection with the four murders to two.

The first man, 23-year-old Regan Collis, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on four counts of murder.

His case was postponed to 25 August for a formal bail application, and he remains in custody.

News24 previously reported that a police source familiar with the investigation described Collis as a suspected member of the Vatos Locos gang and said investigators were probing whether the killings were linked to an attempt to climb the gang’s ranks.

The source said Collis was known in the Reiger Park underworld and faced separate criminal charges, including murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police have not confirmed that the killings were a gang ritual, and the motive remains under investigation.

Constables Thapelo Tlomatsane and Sphiwe Sibeko were responding to reports of gunfire when they were allegedly ambushed. Jaydin Magerman, 27, and Rolene Lessing, 31, had been shot shortly before the officers arrived. A third person was wounded.

The two officers’ funerals were held this weekend, with Sibeko laid to rest on Saturday and Tlomatsane buried on Sunday.

Mathe said the suspect is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court this week.
