Orlando Pirates got back on the winning trail with a 3-0 victory over Chippa United in Betway Premiership action on Sunday afternoon.
It was all to play for the Buccaneers following the disappointing midweek draw against AmaZulu at the same stadium, while Chippa chased their first win of the campaign having opened up their campaign playing to successive draws.
The Buccaneers pushed for a fast start in the opening five minutes as Oswin Appollis came on the far side of the box to cut-inside and forced goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to palm his shot back into play.
Chippa came in their own in the midway point of the first half and worried the visitors when a teasing shot from outside the box by Sirgio Kammies forced goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to dive the near post and sent the effort wide.
The momentum swung back to the Buccaneers towards halftime as they launched another threat when a curling free-kick on the far side by Deon Hotto required Nwabali to position adequately and tip over the crossbar.
Pirates continued to show intent ten minutes after halftime and were rewarded as Patrick Maswanganyi came short into the area and played a forward pass to Ghampani Lungu to fire into the near post from a tight angle.
The title holders extended their lead after four minutes later when a pin-point delivery by Hotto found the towering presence of Lebone Seema, who headed in the bottom-corner to record his first goal of the season.
Maswanganyi’s afternoon ended with 20 minutes to go following a decent display on the park as he made way for Simphiwe Masilela in the first substitution that the Buccaneers instituted.
Chippa almost pulled one back ten minutes later with a perfectly struck free-kick outside the area by Bandile Dlamini following a coming-together, but Chaine dived across and palmed into touch.
However, the Buccaneers made sure of the points in second-half stoppage time after substitute Daniel Msendami pressed from the front and seized possession to go clear on goal and fired into the near corner to record his first goal for the club.
