Khune Backs Chiefs Youngsters To Shine This Season
Itumeleng Khune believes Kaizer Chiefs’ youngsters are ready to write their own chapter in the club’s history, with the legendary goalkeeper declaring this “a season for youngsters” at Naturena.
The former Chiefs captain singled out Luke Baartman for praise after the winger claimed the first Man of the Match award of the season, highlighting how the 23-year-old has embraced the legacy attached to the number 11 jersey.
Khune revealed he spoke to Baartman after the youngster scored against him whilst playing for Cape Town Spurs at FNB Stadium, telling him to stay focused because he would end up at Chiefs in the near future.
“After the game I went to him and I told him that, ‘please keep the focus. Keep working hard. In the near future we’ll see you at Kaizer Chiefs’ – and he did exactly that,” Khune told media.
The jersey number carries significant weight at Chiefs, having been worn by greats including the late Emmanuel Scara Ngobse, Jabu Mahlangu and Khama Billiat. Khune emphasised that Baartman understands the responsibility that comes with donning the black and gold.
“He knows what number he’s wearing. He knows what legacy he’s carrying,” Khune added.
Baartman has formed an effective partnership with Mfundo Vilakazi on the wings, though competition for places remains fierce with Asanele Velebayi and Pule Mmodi waiting for opportunities.

Khune’s endorsement carries considerable significance given his status at the club and understanding of what it takes to succeed at Chiefs. His comments suggest the technical team have faith in the younger players to deliver consistently rather than relying solely on experienced heads.
The challenge for Baartman and his fellow youngsters will be maintaining the early-season form that has earned Khune’s public backing.
