Feutmba: Sundowns Can Win Back-To-Back CAF CL Titles

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Roger Fuetmba believes that the reigning African champions will be hot favourites to win the title again.

Sundowns received a bye for the first preliminary round and will, therefore, face either Angolan side Wiliete SC or Foresters from the Seychelles in the second preliminary round, following the draw on Thursday.

All eyes will be on the Brazilians and the team could be put under immense pressure to repeat the feat, but Fuetmba insisted that the Tshwane side can live up to expectations yet again.

“There’s no doubt about that. Sundowns has the squad to retain the title. Like I always say, Sundowns, for me, is the best team in Africa today.

“Not just because we won the Champions League, but because of the consistency, because of the quality of the players involved in that team. Also because of the depth we have in that team, because it’s not only about two or three players. You have a squad that is built around a great project. The way Sundowns plays football, that is the way I believe football should be played.”

Feutmba, however, cautioned Sundowns against complacency, adding that over-confidence could be their undoing in Africa’s premium club competition.

“Football sometimes is unpredictable. So, you always have to be alert, to be careful, to make sure that you don’t accommodate complacency.

“And to keep everybody aware that we are on top. We’re going to face a lot of challenges. We’re going to face competition,” Feutmba concluded.

The first leg of the 1st preliminary round will be played on the weekend of 4-6 September, while the second leg is scheduled for 11-13 September.

The second preliminary round is set for 16-18 October for the first leg and the return fixtures from 23-25 October.
