Chairman breaks silence on Mokoena’s alleged snub of Swallows Steering Committee

The Dube Birds Steering Committee Chairperson, Thulani Mayekiso has responded to allegations that Walter Mokoena, the businessman behind the revival of Moroka Swallows, is reluctant to meet the organisation.

Swallows legend Steve Sekano, speaking to KickOff, claimed to have discussed the Steering Committee’s intentions to meet Mokoena, the former sportscaster-turned-businessman. According to Sekano, Mokoena does not know the organisation and sees no need to meet its members.

The allegations have raised concern among Swallows supporters, particularly the Steering Committee, who feel they were excluded from the newly branded Moroka Swallows SC project and not consulted about the club’s revival.

However, Mayekiso believes Sekano’s comments reflect questions that the former Steering Committee member had already raised before leaving the group.

“I read the article, and I have not found any reason not to believe the article. I have no reason to believe he (Mokoena) may be misrepresented. I do believe that indeed it could be him saying that,” Mayekiso responded when contacted by this website.

“But in a nutshell, what he said is that Walter Mokoena is not so keen in meeting the Steering Committee, Walter Mokoena does not know who the Steering Committee are and does not know what to say to them. That’s in summary what the article said.

“Look, it’s not new, and it’s not odd coming from Steve (Sekano) because that’s basically the question he posed to us himself before he left our group and remember Steve has been part of the Steering Committee for the better part of the two years the Steering Committee has been in place,” Mayekiso continued.

“Automatically he knew what was happening behind us but never said. As for the question, it could be a question posed by Walter but I’m definitely sure that it is questions dominating his mind more than Walter, because he has verbalised them to us before leaving the group. So there’s no disappointment there, there’s no surprise there.”

Despite the noise surrounding Sekano’s comments, the Steering Committee refused to be deterred. They pressed ahead with plans to contact Mokoena directly and the early response has been far more encouraging than the headlines suggested.

“The little bit of surprise comes when we decide as the Steering Committee that we will proceed with our plan to try and meet with Mokoena, despite the article. Fortunately, our Secretary (General) reached out to Walter Mokoena, and he shared the response with us,” Mayekiso explained.

“And the response says, ‘Hi Hlalele, received, currently busy with club commitment, will respond in due course’ and to us that sounds positive, that sounds like someone leaning forward to meet us and he is sort of not aligned with what we read in the article,” the Steering Committee Chair added.
