Cameron wants Ramaphosa to axe Mchunu to contain his growing costs
Police Committee chairperson Ian Cameron said Mchunu’s legal costs and remuneration have now cost the State almost R6 million since he was placed on special leave in July 2025.
Police Committee chairperson Ian Cameron has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Minister Senzo Mchunu to contain his growing legal and salary costs.
Cameron said Mchunu’s legal costs and remuneration have now cost the State almost R6 million since he was placed on special leave in July 2025.
The State has paid R2.7 million for Mchunu’s legal costs.
Cameron said Ramaphosa has the constitutional power to remove a minister.
He said Mchunu could have been relieved of his executive duties while retaining his parliamentary seat.
Cameron said Mchunu’s remuneration and legal representation alone account for approximately R5.86 million to date.
This is absolutely reckless and negligent taxpayer spending.
Cameron said that removing Mchunu from Cabinet would not amount to a criminal conviction and his parliamentary remuneration would remain.
