Downs Not Pressing Panic Button Over Cardoso?

Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to exercise patience over head coach Miguel Cardoso, with the club not looking to make any rash decisions after their CAF Champions League exit.

Sundowns suffered a big shock on Friday evening following their exit from the Champions League as defending champions. They played to a 1-1 draw with Angolan outfit Wiliete, after the first leg away from home ended goalless. Since winning the Champions League in 2016, Sundowns have not been knocked out before the group stages, so it’s a bitter pill to swallow for the reigning champions.

Sundowns are a club that has set the standard of reaching the latter stages of the Champions League every season, so this early exit has put a lot of pressure of Cardoso, but indications are that the club will continue to show their faith in the Portuguese mentor.

After reaching two Champions League finals with Sundowns, as well as success in the Betway Premiership and more recently the MTN8, Cardoso is unlikely to leave Chloorkop at this moment, Soccer Laduma understands.

Sundowns are going to participate in the Carling Knockout Cup, CAF Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup in the coming weeks, with the belief that they can still add to the trophies they have lifted this season – the MTN8 and FIFA African-Asian Pacific Cup.

While there is a lot of disappointment within the Sundowns camp over the Champions League exit, indications are that the club is taking stock and planning to carry on with Cardoso at the helm.

Sundowns take on Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout last 16 at Loftus Stadium tomorrow night, hoping to get their hands on another domestic title. They will take on Algerian side USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on November 8.
