216 blocks of cocaine seized at Joburg airport
Five luggage bags containing 216 blocks of cocaine weighing about 250kg, with an estimated street value of more than R200m, were intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The seizure was made by a team comprising officials from the police service, customs and the Border Management Authority.
Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said this forms part of sustained efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on drug trafficking through the country’s busiest international airport.
Mathe said over the past 24 months, 116 drug mules have been arrested at the Johannesburg airport.
