Sukazi Reminds Chiefs: ‘They’ve Never Beaten Us in a Cup Match’
TS Galaxy boss Tim Sukazi has sent a warning to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of Tuesday’s Carling Knockout first-round clash, with Amakhosi set to host the Rockets at the FNB Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 — and Sukazi has reason to believe his team can upset the hosts.
Chiefs and TS Galaxy have met on two occasions in cup competitions over the years, with the Rockets boasting a remarkable 100% record against the Soweto giants in knockout football.
In the first clash, TS Galaxy, then a second-tier club, stunned Chiefs during the 2019 Nedbank Cup final in Durban, registering a 1-0 victory — a result that sent shockwaves through South African football. The two sides met again in the same cup competition in 2022, with TS Galaxy once again beating Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium in a last-32 clash — this time while sitting rock bottom of the league.
Sukazi sees no reason why his side cannot repeat the feat for a third time, drawing confidence from the club’s historical dominance over Amakhosi in knockout football.
“Exciting match. They’ve never beaten us, by the way, in a cup match. So, that’s a starting point. Whether we are in the NFD or PSL (top-flight), as we speak, we are proud holders of one trophy, and we won it while we were in the NFD against Chiefs. Indeed, we also met in the Nedbank Cup (in 2022), and we were able to beat them at Soccer City, and at that point in time, we were number last on the log.”
“So, that makes it a very exciting game. We will be coming out there wanting to win this game,” said Sukazi this week.
The Rockets chairman acknowledged Chiefs’ mandate to win trophies, but made it clear that his side will not be rolling over — vowing to approach the match with the same confidence that has served them well against the Glamour Boys in the past.
“They are a big club and they would want to win a cup. I think it’s one of their written mandates: be it you are a coach or a player at Kaizer Chiefs, you should win a title. So, we are TS Galaxy, and we have our own levels of arrogance. We are going there to win. We are not going to Soccer City to come out as losers.”
“We want to stay in the cup; we want to win the cup,” Sukazi stated.
