Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul says this weekend’s Diamonds and Dorings Kimberley Big Hole Marathon is expected to be more successful than the inaugural marathon last year.

He was speaking at a media briefing in Kimberley ahead of the marathon that will take place this Saturday and Sunday.

The event has attracted more than 4 000 runners locally and about 200 from the rest of Africa.

Saul says due to last year’s marathon congestion, they have decided to hold the competition over two days.

“Preparations for the race are progressing quite well, so our aim is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate, that no one is left behind. The operational preparation plans are well underway; you guys can see here it’s like the race can start tomorrow. We are ready to start. The race route is certified and approximately 30 water bowls will be available and we have already arranged sachets.”
