A VIEW OF THE WEEK: Not delivering service, only harm
Sewage spillage in Soweto.
A weekly column by Digital News Editor Kyle Zeeman.
The state of our infrastructure is a reflection of the state of our governance, and currently, both are in a state of decay that is causing tangible harm to the citizens they are meant to serve.
When service delivery fails, it is not merely an inconvenience; it is a violation of the basic rights of the people who rely on these services for their health, safety, and dignity.
The recent sewage spillages in Soweto are a stark reminder that when local government fails to maintain the systems that keep our communities functioning, the consequences are immediate and severe.
We are seeing a pattern where officials pass the blame, point fingers at one another, and hide behind bureaucratic processes while the public suffers the consequences of their inaction.
It is time for accountability to move beyond empty promises and for those in power to take responsibility for the harm being caused by their failure to deliver the most basic of services.
