Estcourt SPAR and TOPS to close after more than 35 years
Estcourt residents face losing a familiar shopping destination after SPAR and TOPS confirmed they would close after more than 35 years in the town.
The closure has raised concerns about the future of employees and their families, as well as the possible impact on nearby businesses that rely on customers visiting the store, reported the Northern Natal News.
Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality’s Office of the Mayor issued a statement yesterday (October 22) expressing concern about the closure and its potential economic consequences.
According to the municipality, SPAR management met last week with top municipal officials to discuss the planned closure. The municipality said it was informed that the closure had been confirmed because no buyers or prospective new operators were interested in taking over the business.
The closure comes amid wider pressure on South Africa’s grocery retail sector, with consumers facing higher living costs and retailers working to protect profitability in a competitive market.
However, SPAR has not confirmed whether these wider pressures contributed to the decision to close the Estcourt SPAR and TOPS.
The municipality said the closure could affect more than the store’s employees, with neighbouring businesses also potentially losing customers.
