Residents in parts of Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, have been warned not to use tap water while tests are being conducted to determine whether the supply is safe for consumption.

Johannesburg Water issued the warning after repairs to a damaged water pipeline at the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue were completed on Wednesday night.

The damage occurred when a tree stump fell onto the pipeline during excavation work by a contractor replacing a sewer pipe.

The affected areas include 8th Avenue at the intersections of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th streets.

Johannesburg Water said the water supply would remain isolated until laboratory results confirmed that the water met the required quality standards.

“Residents in the affected areas are advised not to use the water until further notice,” the utility said.

Alternative water supplies will continue to be provided while the restriction remains in place.

Johannesburg Water said it would notify affected customers once laboratory clearance had been received and normal water supply could safely resume.
