Former Bucs striker hails Chiefs starlet: ‘I like what he did’

Football analyst and former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe has praised Kaizer Chiefs starlet Mduduzi Shabalala.

Speaking on SuperSport TV’s analytical show ExtraTime, the former striker’s praise follows Shabalala’s crucial equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

The goal highlighted Shabalala’s quality when he struck in the 58th minute to cancel out Sinoxolo Kwayiba’s opening marker.

Receiving the ball from Wandile Duba, Shabalala demonstrated superb composure under pressure, turning sharply before unleashing a surprise effort that beat Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stevens at his near post.

“And that’s where the defender had closed. So he sees the opening on their near post; he sees that Sage Stephens is not really paying attention to that near post.

“So instead of going the traditional way of across the goal, he says, ‘I’m going to put it in the near post.’Great creativity coming from Mdu, and he gets the goal.”

Despite dominating chunks of the game and creating several late opportunities, Chiefs were forced to settle for a single point, continuing a frustrating trend that has seen them struggle to convert dominant displays into maximum points.

The result underlined Amakhosi’s ongoing struggle to find a winning formula domestically despite showing flashes of improvement.

Fernando Da Cruz’ men will look to correct their stuttering form when they host Zambian outfit Red Arrows in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Chiefs face a massive mountain to climb in Durban, knowing they must overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit incurred from the first leg to keep their continental ambitions alive.
