Mamelodi Sundowns have strengthened their midfield, confirming the signing of national under-20 captain Lazola Maku.

Maku left Siwelele FC at the end of last season, a surprise decision from the club considering his growth an international youth level. The midfielder went on trial in Austria with the hope of finding a club, but has now penned a deal with Sundowns.

Maku recently captain the national under-20 to success at the Cosafa U/20 Youth Championships, and brings good experience from winning the 2025 U/20 Africa Cup of Nations and participating in the 2025 U/20 FIFA World Cup.

Maku’s presence will boost Sundowns’ midfield that already has so much quality with the likes of Teboho Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise, Nuno Santos, Thabo Cele and Gomolemo Kekana.

With so much quality, it also means Maku will have his work cut out in trying to break into the team. He was unable to get regular game time while he was at Siwelele, so he needs to double his efforts to get into the Sundowns matchday squad.
