Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has given an estimation of how long right back Khuliso Mudau will be out for after his Achilles rupture.

Sundowns, as well as Bafana Bafana, have been dealt a big blow with the injury sustained by the defender against Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday.

Cardoso does not expect the 31-year-old to be back for at least the next six months, but is confident in the depth they have in that position, with Thapelo Morena and Zuko Mdunyelwa as options to come in for the experienced Mudau, who will go for surgery next week.

Morena celebrated 10 years as a Sundowns player a few days, so his experience in that position will be valuable. Mdunyelwa has shown he can do the job whenever he has been given an opportunity, which should give Cardoso confidence that they can do without Mudau for the next few months.

“Obviously it’s a big loss when you lose probably one of the best African player on the position of right back, and I can also tell because I just spoke with the doctor minutes ago that it’s confirmed a total rupture of the Achillis tendon from Khuliso Mudau and te period out is six months, no less. He will be on surgery next Monday and start the recovery process from there,” Cardoso told media during a MTN8 press conference on Thursday afternoon.

“Unfortunately these things happen in football. We don’t control. We have to deal with the context and we will do it in the best way. It’s important to understand that we also have in that position one of the best right backs in the country. Thapelo Morena is an international player for Bafana Bafana and we also have Zuko who is an international player, so for the moment the trust goes on them.”

Mudau will miss a crucial period for Sundowns, with the FIFA Intercontinental Cup set to be played in September, as well as the start of the CAF Champions League, which the club will be defending. The former Black Leopards player will also miss the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers for Bafana Bafana.

Sundowns will host Golden Arrows in the first leg MTN8 semi-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday. After keeping their first clean sheet of the season in their 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the league on Wednesday night, the Tshwane giants will be confident of getting a favourable result to take into the second leg in KZN.
