Political leaders vying for control of Johannesburg engaged in a heated debate on Wednesday, trading accusations over the city’s governance, the stability of future coalitions, and the persistent scourge of corruption.

The debate, which highlighted the deep divisions among the major political parties, saw representatives from the ANC, DA, and other key players clash over who is best equipped to rescue the city from its current state of service delivery collapse and financial distress.

The era of unstable coalitions must come to an end if we are to restore the dignity of this city and ensure that residents receive the services they deserve,

said one of the participants, emphasizing that the current political fragmentation has paralyzed decision-making in the council.

The DA representative pointed to the party’s track record in other municipalities as evidence of its ability to govern effectively, while the ANC defended its record, arguing that it remains the only party with the national reach and experience to stabilize the city’s finances.

Corruption remained a central theme, with opposition parties accusing the current administration of failing to address systemic graft that has drained the city’s coffers. The debate also touched on the role of private sector partnerships, with calls for a more transparent and collaborative approach to infrastructure maintenance and service delivery.

As the municipal elections approach, the debate underscored the high stakes for Johannesburg, with all parties acknowledging that the city’s recovery is critical not only for its residents but for the national economy as a whole.
