Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected growing calls to scrap the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), sparking a heated debate among South Africans regarding the unit’s future and the motivations behind his stance.

While some political factions and civil society groups have argued that the IDAC has failed to deliver on its mandate to prosecute high-level corruption, Malema maintains that dismantling the institution would be a regressive step for the country’s justice system.

The fight against corruption cannot be won by destroying the very institutions designed to hold the powerful accountable, regardless of their current shortcomings.

Malema’s comments have left the public divided. Supporters of his position argue that the focus should be on reforming and strengthening the IDAC rather than abolishing it, while critics suggest that the EFF leader’s defense of the unit may be politically motivated or misaligned with the frustrations of citizens who have seen little progress in major corruption cases.

As the debate continues, experts remain split on whether the IDAC can be salvaged or if a completely new, independent anti-corruption body is required to restore public trust in South Africa’s legal processes.
