Julius Malema rejects calls to scrap IDAC: South Africans divided by EFF leader’s reasoning
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected growing calls from various political factions to disband the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), sparking a heated national debate regarding the unit’s future.
We completely disagree with that approach. There’s nothing wrong with IDAC. IDAC was behaving in the manner it was behaving because there was no structure playing oversight over that structure.
Malema argued that the issues previously plaguing the directorate were not inherent to the institution itself, but rather a result of a lack of proper oversight. He emphasized that the recent introduction of judicial oversight provides the necessary checks and balances to ensure the unit operates within the law.
The EFF leader’s stance stands in stark contrast to other political voices in the ad hoc committee, some of whom have compared the potential dissolution of IDAC to the historical disbandment of the Scorpions. Proponents of scrapping the unit argue that it has abused its powers and that a complete overhaul of the criminal justice system is required.
As the committee continues its deliberations, the public remains divided. While some citizens support Malema’s view that the unit should be reformed rather than destroyed, others believe that the controversies surrounding IDAC’s leadership and investigative methods necessitate its permanent closure.
