Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, Ramaphosa said violence against women was a “source of profound pain and national shame”.

The 59-year-old suspended deputy national police commissioner appeared at the Randburg magistrate’s court on Tuesday to apply for bail on charges of sexual offences.

He made a startling admission that he had sex with the teenager, who is 41 years his junior, after a night out drinking.

Sibanyoni, president of the South African Local and Long-Distance Taxi and Bus Organisation, faces criminal charges of extorting Tengane Thomas Ntuli, who owns a company that supplied aggregate stone to the South African National Roads Agency’s (Sanral) R573 project.

The taxi boss, who is alleged to be an extortion cartel leader, told the commission he had entered into a partnership with Ntuli because the latter needed to meet a “30% local content” requirement to get the tender in Mpumalanga from Sanral’s main contractor.
