A suspected carjacker was reportedly shot while attempting to flee following a violent hijacking in Johannesburg that is believed to have left one member of the hijacking group dead.
According to preliminary information, the incident unfolded in one of Johannesburg’s busy suburbs during the afternoon when several armed suspects allegedly confronted a motorist in an apparent attempt to steal the victim’s vehicle.
Witnesses said the confrontation escalated rapidly, with gunfire erupting moments after the suspects attempted to escape. Unconfirmed reports from the scene suggest another member of the suspected hijacking group may have died during the exchange of gunfire. Police have not yet released official details regarding any fatalities or arrests, and investigators are working to establish the exact sequence of events.
Emergency medical personnel and officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to the scene, where sections of the road were temporarily cordoned off while detectives collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Johannesburg continues to experience a high number of vehicle hijackings each year, with police repeatedly urging motorists to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity immediately. Security experts note that many incidents occur within seconds, often at intersections, residential driveways, or while motorists are waiting at traffic lights.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have captured additional cellphone or dashcam footage to come forward as the investigation continues.
