He says South Africa is also pushing to strengthen trade and investment ties with the US, while working through the political issues that have strained relations.

“As a whole, I can state that the relationship between South Africa and the United States is actually starting to get better. There are still stumbling blocks. There are still impediments that we have to address. But the point is, from our perspective, we have to sit down and talk about this.”

Meyer adds: “Dialogue can solve all these differences. That is our plea to the US administration on an ongoing basis. Let us address what is still the shortcomings in terms of their requests so that we can solve it and the path forward is clear. We have to talk and have to find the solutions.”
