The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the news that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following a private prosecution initiative by AfriForum. The case stems from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape.

The EFF maintains that the legal action is a politically motivated attempt by AfriForum to silence the party and its leadership through the abuse of the judicial system.

The party stated that they are prepared to defend Malema in court and remain unfazed by what they describe as a campaign of harassment. They argue that the charges are part of a broader strategy by the lobby group to target black political figures who challenge the status quo.

AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, led by Advocate Gerrie Nel, has successfully engaged the National Prosecuting Authority to pursue the matter, asserting that the law must be applied equally regardless of political status.

The legal proceedings are expected to unfold in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, marking another chapter in the ongoing legal battles between the EFF and the civil rights organization.
