The family of former SA U18 prop Luqobo ‘Bibo’ Makwedini has confirmed his death.

Makwedini (20) died in France, where he played for French club AS Béziers Hérault.

It has been reported that he collapsed and died following a training session.

His uncle, Mphumzi Zuzile, told eNCA the family was still struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“As a family, we are still shocked by this horrific tragedy. He had just left last week for France, after a five- week vacation. He was in good spirits. And when we got the news yesterday that he is no more, it shocked the entire family.

“We are in consultation with his club and we are trying to ensure his body is repatriated to South Africa. We will give more details about the funeral sometime next week.

“We are very sad. We request the community and people out there to give us space as a family while we deal with the tragedy,” said Zuzile.

South Africans fell in love with Makwedini when he played for his high school, Wynberg Boys’ High School.

Bob Skinstad, president of AS Béziers Hérault confirmed it in a statement.

“Luqobo joined our academy during the off-season and quickly became a cherished member of the Red and Blue family. His commitment, kindness, and character left a profound mark on the entire club.

“During this time of immense pain, AS Béziers Hérault stands with his loved ones and offers them our full support.

“We respectfully ask that the club, our players, and Bibo’s loved ones be granted the time and privacy needed to grieve during this incredibly difficult period,” said Skinstad.
